Abstract:
The article re-examines certain painted scenes in the Roman villa of the Farnesina, dated to ca. 20 BC. They probably represent the adventutous stories of 'common people', represented in a cultivated style within a context probably owned by figures of the Augustan court. The article finally presents paintings of the same subjects in a Roman columbarium of a libertus and discusses the possible social implications of this evidence.
