The article illustrates the state of research in the field of Islamic epigraphy with regard to three major areas of the Eastern Islamic world (Afghanistan and the Indian subcontinent), whose study tradition began in the late nineteenth century. The participation of the author in the activities of the Italian Archaeological Mission in Afghanistan allows for a precise update on the results achieved in recent years
