Abstract:
The author presents an unpublished painting by Valentin de
Boulogne, a 'Saint Jerome' datable to a relatively early moment in the
French artist’s career, around the beginning of the 1620s. The new
work, ascribed in its former collection to the circle of Jusepe de Ribera
and clearly modelled on Caravaggio’s Saint Jerome in the Borghese
Gallery, is emblematic of the significant evolution of Roman naturalism
– expressed at its highest level by Valentin – which drew inspiration
from the variations and enhancements brought by Ribera to the
figurative repertoire established by Caravaggio.
