Articolo
Data di Pubblicazione:
2024
Abstract:
In exploring the notion of “magic” in Japan, this article provides an analysis of the term jujutsu (呪術/咒術),
a concept significant in both premodern and modern Japanese contexts. Following an introductory survey
that clarifies how Japanese scholars explain “magic” in dictionary entries and highlights different approaches
in history and anthropology, the article deals with the term jujutsu in Japanese folklore studies. It illustrates
how modern interpretations of jujutsu diverge from its historical usage, emphasizing the importance of understanding both historical and modern perspectives to fully grasp jujutsu’s role in Japanese cultural history.
