Syllabus

Course Objectives

Students are required to be largely competent about the main cultural and literary English productions between the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century. They are expected to show advanced analytical skills and an original approach to the texts proposed by the course. Their competence should be sustained by mature conversation and expression skills.


Course Prerequisites

Students need to have a good knowledge of the English language in order to read and analyze the literary texts proposed. They are required to possess a solid competence in the main cultural and historical trends which characterized European culture during the Eighteenth and Nineteenth century.


Teaching Methods

Students are highly recommended to attend the lessons. The texts and the issues proposed will be discussed at length during the classes, and moments of collective discussion and confrontation will be much welcome.


Assessment Methods

The final exam is an oral exam, which can partly be taken in written form. Students have to show full and mature analytical knowledge of the texts and cultural contexts proposed by the course. Their expressive qualities and communicative skills will be graded according to the Italian University system from 18 to 30.


Texts

All students are required to study:

  • a Cultural History of the English literary production from the Eighteenth Century to the Nineteenth Century;
  • a Reader containing selections from critical essays and literary texts;
  • novels: Frankenstein (Mary Shelley); Dracula (Bram Stoker); Great Expectations (Charles Dickens).
