Overview

Date/time interval

CICLO ANNUALE UNICO (29/09/2025 - 29/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

To develop advanced skills in the reading, interpretation, and critical analysis of classical Tibetan texts across a range of literary genres within the cultural and religious tradition, including historiographies, hagiographies, ritual texts, devotional hymns, and spiritual songs. Particular emphasis will be placed on the linguistic, stylistic, and thematic features distinctive to each genre.

Course Prerequisites

Applicants are expected to have previously studied the Tibetan language during their undergraduate program or to have attained at least an intermediate level of proficiency.

However, admission to the program without prior knowledge of Tibetan is permitted exclusively within Curriculum 1 (Languages and Literatures) and only for well-founded academic reasons, which will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the Admissions Committee. In such instances, students may begin their study of Tibetan at an elementary level, provided that this path demonstrably contributes to the refinement of their academic profile and the attainment of advanced competencies in both methodological approaches and linguistic theory.

Teaching Methods

Teaching activities include interactive lectures that encourage active student participation, mainly focusing on practical exercises in translating Tibetan literary texts. Students will directly analyze and translate selected passages, supported by specialized seminars designed to introduce essential tools for textual criticism and interpreting classical literature. The approach emphasizes learning through guided practice, fostering the gradual development of independence in reading and encouraging critical engagement with the texts.

Assessment Methods

Students’ skills in comprehension, analysis, and translation of Tibetan texts will be continuously assessed throughout the course by means of practical exercises and active classroom participation.

The final evaluation consists of two mandatory components: a written examination and an oral examination.

  1. Written examination (a prerequisite for the oral): includes grammar exercises, translation of sentences to and from Tibetan, and the translation of short passages from Classical Tibetan. This component assesses the student’s command of linguistic structures and their ability to apply them accurately.
  2. Oral examination: involves the reading and translation of a Classical Tibetan text, comprehension tasks, and, where applicable, a brief and simple conversation in Tibetan. This part aims to evaluate not only linguistic proficiency but also the student’s interpretive abilities and understanding of textual context.

Examination language: Italian and Tibetan. The examination may be conducted in English upon justified request by the student.
