Course Objectives

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

Language I:

The course aims to deepen students’ linguistic, lexical, and morphosyntactic knowledge of Neo-Persian through the reading, translation, and analysis of classical and contemporary texts, both prose and poetry, belonging to different genres. Particular attention will be devoted to contemporary Persian in current literary production, journalistic writing, and colloquial language (Tehrani variety), with the goal of enabling students to acquire appropriate communicative competence and a high level of analytical skills.

Language II:

The course will broaden students’ knowledge of Persian vocabulary and syntax. It includes intensive practice in translating from Persian into Italian and from Italian into Persian, as well as the analysis of texts related to various specialized registers. Particular attention will be given to contemporary Persian, both literary and journalistic or essayistic. The objective of the course is to develop appropriate communicative competence and effective research methods.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

Language I: By the end of the course, students must demonstrate a good knowledge of written and spoken Persian and have acquired solid skills in reading, translating, and analysing literary texts and other types of materials.

Language II: Students must be able to participate in conversations relating to various contexts and to use some forms of specialized language in both written and spoken production. They should also demonstrate that they have acquired the methodological tools necessary to confidently read newspaper articles, essays, and literary texts, and to develop discussions on the topics addressed.

FURTHER EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

Independent judgement: By the end of the course, students must demonstrate that they have acquired the ability to exercise independent judgement in analysing Persian texts of varying complexity and genre.

Communication skills: By the end of the course, students must demonstrate that they have acquired a well-developed vocabulary enabling them to engage in conversations on the various topics covered during the course.

Learning skills: By the end of the course, students must demonstrate that they have developed good learning skills and a high degree of autonomy in discussing a variety of topics in Persian and in translating complex texts.


Course Prerequisites

An intermediate level of knowledge of the Persian language is required.


Teaching Methods

The teaching activities include: lectures, language exercises, translation practice of various types of texts from Persian into Italian and from Italian into Persian, composition exercises in Persian, seminars, and other activities (individual or group reports or research).


Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a written test and an oral examination.

The written test, which is a prerequisite for the oral exam, consists of a reading comprehension assessment with multiple-choice questions administered through the Moodle platform.

Language of the exam: Italian and Persian. In specific cases (e.g., Erasmus students), the exam may be taken in English and Persian.

During the oral exam, students must demonstrate the ability to apply the grammatical and communicative knowledge and skills acquired during lectures and language exercises. They must be able to present the topics covered during the course clearly and be able to engage in conversation in Persian on a variety of subjects with fluency and spontaneity.

Evaluation criteria: In the oral exam, the students’ grammatical and communicative knowledge and skills acquired during lectures and language exercises will be assessed. Additionally, the clarity and accuracy in presenting the topics covered during the course will be evaluated, as well as the command and richness of vocabulary used in the conversation in Persian.
