The course offers an introductory yet structured overview of the civilizations that have developed in the Himalayan region—particularly in Northern India, Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, and China—from prehistory to the contemporary era. Emphasis will be placed on the historical, religious, cultural, and artistic dynamics that have made this area one of the most fascinating and complex in Asia.

Special attention will be devoted to the following key periods and themes:

Prehistoric and protohistoric cultures of the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding regions;

  • The expansion and cultural legacy of the Tibetan Empire (7th–9th centuries);
  • The Tibetan Renaissance (10th–13th centuries) and the flourishing of religious and literary production;
  • The formation of the major Buddhist schools and their philosophical and literary canons;
  • The governmental system of the Dalai Lamas and the major historical developments that shaped Tibet and the Himalayan countries during the twentieth century.

The course will also include interdisciplinary modules focusing on Tibetan art and iconography, sacred poetry and music, and key elements of traditional Tibetan medicine.
