Syllabus

Course Objectives

Expected Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the student is expected to have a full understanding of Spanish phonology and orthography. In terms of morphology, they should have acquired knowledge of word inflection and composition processes. They should demonstrate mastery of regular and irregular verb conjugations in the indicative mood, present subjunctive, imperative, past participle, and gerund. They should also know the degrees of comparison of adjectives, as well as demonstrative, possessive, indefinite, relative, interrogative, and exclamatory adjectives and pronouns.

Ability to Apply Knowledge and Understanding

At the end of the course, the student should have acquired the four main linguistic and communicative skills (listening, reading, speaking, and writing) in Spanish at a B1 level. They should be able to apply the knowledge gained by demonstrating the ability to understand clearly spoken Spanish on familiar topics, to comprehend short written texts in everyday language, to recount personal experiences and events as well as the plot of a book and/or a film, briefly explaining their impressions, and to produce simple and coherent texts on familiar topics and/or subjects of personal interest, expressing their thoughts.

Additional Expected Learning Outcomes

Independent Judgment:

By the end of the course, the student should be able to express personal opinions and judgments on familiar topics in both written and spoken Spanish.

Communication Skills:

By the end of the course, the student should be able to communicate information about personal experiences, express ideas and opinions using simple and coherent language, and discuss current events.

Learning Skills:

By the end of the course, the student should have developed the learning skills necessary to undertake the second year of Spanish Language studies.

Course Prerequisites

No prior knowledge is required at the beginning of the course, as Spanish language instruction starts from the basics.

Prerequisites

None.

Teaching Methods

The teaching activities consist of 54 hours of lectures, both frontal and interactive, with the instructor (during the first semester), and year-long practice sessions, considered an integral part of the course, with the CELs (Collaborators and Language Experts). During lectures and practice sessions, students will engage in exercises and group work. Due to the specific nature of the subject, attendance to both the course and the practice sessions, although not mandatory, is highly recommended.

An additional 30 hours are dedicated to self-study, to be carried out on the UNIOR e-learning platform, for which registration is mandatory.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a written test and an oral test. Students can view the structure of the written test on the university’s Moodle platform:

https://elearning.unior.it/course/view.php?id=3704

Name of the course: Spanish Language I

Enrollment key for students: s&p21!r5

The written test focuses on various grammatical aspects (conjunctions, determiners, pronouns, prepositions, indicative tenses, imperative, present subjunctive). Passing the written test is a prerequisite for access to the oral test, which aims to assess the student's language proficiency, correct use of the language, and ability to present, in clear and coherent Spanish, the plot of the assigned reading book. The language of the exam is Spanish. The final grade for the oral exam is given on a scale of 30.

No midterm exams are scheduled.

There is no difference in the program between attending and non-attending students.
