Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (23/02/2026 - 29/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES.

The course proposes urban and regional development issues through the perspective of economic-political geography. Consistent with the content described in the syllabus, students will be expected to demonstrate knowledge and exposition of the topics discussed in the course and presented in the reference texts, mastering the theoretical and applicative issues proposed. Using concepts and tools proper to the discipline, students will have to decline the knowledge acquired at various scales, demonstrating the ability to reason independently about the issues that emerge from the geographical reading of the territorial contexts studied.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

In line with the educational objectives of the L-12 degree program, the course aims to provide the basic geographical concepts and methodological tools necessary to analyze the territorial dimension and its possible evolutions, also with reference to interethnic and intercultural dynamics. Starting with notions of political and economic geography concerning various topics, students will have to demonstrate their ability to outline the phenomena studied using the fundamental concepts and specific language of the discipline, including cartographic representations. Students will also be expected to demonstrate the ability to support arguments related to the spatial dynamics analyzed through appropriate steps of scale.

ADDITIONAL EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

Autonomy of judgment:

students should demonstrate autonomy of judgment in outlining the phenomena studied and critically exposing the most relevant elements contained in the reference texts. With regard to contemporary phenomena, students will be expected to demonstrate not only the ability to deal with current political and economic dynamics, but also to be able to support geographical arguments aimed at solving problems emerging from the field of study.

Communication skills:

students should demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions regarding phenomena studied from a geographical perspective. Through appropriate and specific disciplinary language, they will also have to demonstrate that they have made the acquired skills their own and can return them clearly and adequately.

Learning skills:

at the end of the training course, students will have to demonstrate that they have acquired a range of learning skills based not only on the conscious use of concepts, methods and tools on the proposed geographical themes, but also on the role that geographical reading can take on in an interdisciplinary perspective, in order to undertake subsequent studies with an adequate degree of autonomy.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of political and economic geography acquired in secondary school is important for the study of the discipline.

Teaching Methods

The teaching activities will be distributed as follows: 54 hours of mainly frontal teaching, with projections of slides, geographic and thematic maps; some lectures will have a seminar format and will be aimed, also through the intervention of expert lecturers on specific issues, at deepening particularly relevant phenomena and stimulating critical reflection. In general, although in the context of frontal lectures and particularly in moments with a seminar format, students will be involved through questions and discussions.

Assessment Methods

The examination will consist of an oral test. The test will cover in general the topics indicated under “contents” and in particular the topics set out in the reference texts.

Evaluation criteria: the final evaluation, expressed in thirtieths, is intended to ascertain the acquisition of the appropriate knowledge and skills. The evaluation criteria with which the verification of the knowledge and skills acquired will be carried out are: coherence and completeness of information, with particular attention to the different scale steps to be taken; correct use of disciplinary language to outline the main concepts; ability to apply the tools of geographic analysis to the different phenomena addressed; ability to interpret the cartographic representations that summarize the phenomena studied in the various territorial contexts.
