Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (29/09/2025 - 16/01/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, the student will be aware of the main topics in the history of the early modern age (also discussed through classroom debates on key words) and will acquire notions of historical methodology. They will also have precise spatial and temporal coordinates and be able to identify connections, persistences and transformations in long-term historical processes.

Course Prerequisites

No prerequisites required

Teaching Methods

The hours scheduled for teaching activities will be distributed between the following typologies: face-to-face lessons; viewing of historical documentaries and docufilms related to the teaching in question; critical analysis of other teaching materials provided by the professor in order to deepen the issues dealt with. In addition to classroom lectures, the Microsoft Teams platform will be used to improve the quality of learning and facilitate access to resources. Attendance and active participation in the Course are strongly encouraged and recommended.

Assessment Methods

The examination is conducted in oral form and in Italian, with open questions designed to test knowledge of the course content, which must be explained clearly and in appropriate language. The assessment is expressed in thirtieths.

Texts

There is no distinction in the syllabus between students and non-attendees. For all of them, the syllabus consists of:

1) L. Mascilli Migliorini, L’età moderna. Una storia globale, Laterza 2020 (up to p. 298 for the students taking the 6 CFU exam)

2) Lecture recordings and other materials (cartography, iconography, videos, articles and texts) used by the professor to explore the issues analysed and uploaded onto the Microsoft Teams platform (virtual course room).

Downloads are recommended by spring 2026.

Contents

The course will focus on issues related to the socio-political dynamics of the early modern age up to the early 19th century. Distinctive features of the course will be: the use of audiovisuals and digital resources (with the aim of learning about what the web has to offer, but also of teaching its correct use), and an openness to issues of gender history and public history.

Course Language

Italian

More information

Non-attending students are still required to register on the Microsoft Teams platform in order to download the lecture recordings and other teaching materials that are an integral part, together with the textbook, of the course preparation. It is recommended to download all materials by spring 2025.

Virtual classroom code: cz3mxek.
