Course Objectives
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
The module is a time of consolidation and verification of the knowledge
and skills that students have acquired during their study of English
linguistics, and provides for the attainment of an advanced level of
English proficiency.
It also provides for:
- In-depth knowledge of theories and recent studies in the field of
translation of specialised discourse into English;
- In-depth knowledge of the methodologies, techniques and translation
strategies of specialised texts in English;
- Knowledge of the main studies and methods in the field of terminology
and critical discourse analysis;
- Knowledge of the main computer-assisted and digital tools for
translation.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The course aims to provide students with the knowledge and
methodological tools necessary for the following activities:
- Data collection, analysis and translation of texts related to different
areas of specialised communication;
- Translation and analysis of texts related to different genres and text
types in use in different specialised domains;
- Translation and analysis of written, audiovisual, and multimedia texts
from the contemporary world.
ADDITIONAL EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
Autonomy of judgment:
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to demonstrate
their ability in both written and oral comprehension and analysis of
English texts, and in the translation and production of specialised written
and oral texts in English as well as in their target language (i.e. Italian).
Communication Skills:
Students are expected to demonstrate their ability to communicate in
English in an articulate manner, making use of specialised vocabulary,
morphosyntax and communicative strategies appropriate to the context
of use.
Learning skills:
Students should demonstrate their autonomy in learning and applying
the linguistic structures covered in the module, and should be able to use
analytic tools in the specialised use of the English language.
Course Prerequisites
No prerequisites.
Teaching Methods
The course takes place in the first semester, and it includes lectures and
activities on the Teams platform entirely in English, as well as activities
on the creation, translation and analysis of both written and audiovisual
texts individually and in group under the supervision of the lecturer.
The course is semester-based. Practice and exercised with native
speakers/CELs will be held in both the first and second semester.
Assessment Methods
The examination consists of an oral exam. The exam will be in English
and in the target language of the translations (Italian).
The oral exam will focus on the topics of the course programme, of the
classroom activities, and on the presentation of a portfolio of translations
by the student.
The portfolio, to be handed in via email one week before the exam, must contain a
minimum of 3 specialised texts of various genres and complexity,
translated and commented on on the basis of the knowledge and the
theoretical-practical skills acquired during the course.
Evaluation Criteria:
The final assessment may range from 18/30 to 30/30 depending on the
level of accuracy and completeness of the oral interview, the correct use
of methodologies, theories and practices of specialised translation, and
the written and oral mastery of both English and the target language
(Italian).
The minimum grade (18/30) is awarded when the student demonstrates
uncertain or partial mastery in the application of the knowledge and
methods studied, and has fragmentary or limited knowledge of only the
basic fundamentals of the various topics covered. He/she also
demonstrates minimal mastery of the English language in arguing and
expounding the topics, partially in line with an advanced level of English
language proficiency.
The highest grade (30/30) is awarded when the student demonstrates
complete and thorough mastery in the application of the theoretical
knowledge and methods of analysis studied, and is able to address
problems critically and accurately. The student also demonstrates a high
command of the English language in arguing and expounding the topics
without uncertainty, consistent with an advanced level of English
language proficiency.
Laude is awarded when the student demonstrates absolute mastery of
theoretical and methodological content, the ability to correlate the
various topics covered in the programme, and is able to present the
topics with remarkable expressive skills.
