Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (29/09/2025 - 16/01/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course intends to provide a historical and analytical reconstruction of a specific phenomenon - that of the New Theatre -, aiming at understanding the functioning of the linguistic mechanisms of the stage. At the end of the lectures, students will have to demonstrate that they 1. possess an overall knowledge of the history of theatre between the mid-1950s and the early 1920s; 2. know how to recognise the construction and structure of the works; 3. reconstruct the mechanisms of theatrical storytelling; 4. know how to relate dramaturgical data and stage sign.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

In the assessment, the student must be able to formulate an organic and coherent discourse on the topics addressed during the training course. Starting from the topics addressed, and from the knowledge acquired, the student must demonstrate: 1. critical capacity in the analysis of historical and critical issues relating to the New Theatre 2. broad knowledge of artistic experiences, applying personal and autonomous strategies of reading and approach; 3. ability to analyse the historical and critical texts adopted; 4. adequate knowledge of the linguistic elements of the theatrical scene 5. ability to relate the mechanisms of the scenic narrative to those of the theatrical action.

FURTHER EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

Autonomy of judgement:

The student should be able to identify and rework the information contained in the adopted texts, managing to organise the exposition of the topic in a personal way.

Communication skills:

The student should be able to report coherently, logically and exhaustively on the topics addressed

Learning skills:

The student will have to express an adequate critical understanding of the texts studied, demonstrating that he/she has understood the themes and issues dealt with during the course in a non-fragmentary and non-mnemonic manner.

Course Prerequisites

A useful prerequisite would be knowledge of the basic outlines of theatre history but, given that not all students taking the examination in the Master's degree have taken one in the same subject area in the three-year course, it is not taken for granted and an attempt will be made to compensate for its possible lack during the course with information deemed indispensable.

On the other hand, a good knowledge of history, cultural history and literary history and a suitably mature approach to study are expected.

PROPEDEUTICALITY

None

Teaching Methods

Teaching includes lectures and interactive lectures by the lecturer, aimed at guiding students in learning the proposed topics. Lessons will be conducted with the support of audiovisual documents and teaching materials organised with the use of multimedia tools.

Assessment Methods

The examination consists of an oral interview. Assessment criteria: coherence in the exposition, capacity for historical contextualisation, ability to analyse the narrative structures of spectacular works, completeness of information, technical and linguistic language property.

Language of the exam: Italian.
