Syllabus

Course Objectives

Analysis and translation of literary, scientific, and popular texts focused on environmental issues, the human-environment relationship, sustainable development, and sustainable economy.

Study of key terms and concepts related to the environment and eco-literature.Additionally, the course will examine recent trends in lexical renewal, exploring the dynamics of neology in Arabic, observing contributions not only from mass media but also from authors such as Muhammad al-Makhzanji. Finally, it will explore the differences between standard and non-standard language, as well as the use of various linguistic registers (the transition from Fuṣḥā to Lahaǧāt) by contemporary authors and their translation rendering.


Course Prerequisites

To engage with the content outlined in the course, students must possess advanced language skills and competencies at level B2 of the CEFR.

The teaching of Arabic Language I M is preparatory for Arabic Language II M.



Teaching Methods

The course is structured as follows:

· 48 hours of classroom lessons

· 6 hours per week of Arabic language exercises

The teaching includes both lectures and interactive sessions led by the instructor, aimed at guiding students in learning the studied topics. During the lessons, conducted by the instructor in Arabic and with a communicative approach, the theoretical foundations for analyzing phraseological structures in various types of texts (journalistic, literary, sector-specific) are provided. Additionally, there is work on syntactic and stylistic analysis of texts and, finally, translation exercises. Regular conversation practice in Standard Arabic and in the Syro-Lebanese dialect is carried out with CEL and is considered an integral part of the course. To assess the skills acquired, students will be required to produce individual papers or research on specific topics.


Assessment Methods

The assessment of students' achievement is carried out through a written exam, which includes comprehension and translation of texts from Arabic, syntactic tests, and lexical exercises. The use of a monolingual dictionary is permitted during the written exam.

The oral exam consists of two parts:

A) An interview in Arabic with the CEL, during which students must present and discuss a text analyzed during the exercises;

B) An oral test with the instructor, aimed at assessing the student's ability to speak in Arabic. Students should be able to discuss the topics covered in the course and perform syntactic analysis of literary texts and other types of texts analyzed during the course.

The final grade is expressed on a thirty-point scale. The written exam is a prerequisite for the oral exam, and passing it is an essential condition for being admitted to the oral test.

Language of the exam: Arabic.


Texts

Specific Materials:

Articles (from specialized magazines) and official reports from environmental organizations, excerpts from literary texts addressing environmental themes. Particular focus will be given to contemporary authors who explore themes such as war, environmental crisis, the human-nature relationship, and sustainability.
