Course Objectives

Expected learning outcomes:

The course aims to introduce students of the Master's Degree in Languages and Intercultural Communication in the Euro-Mediterranean Area (MLC) to the critical analysis of discourse in Spanish, with particular attention to the languages of politics, journalism and multimodality.

Starting from the study of authentic texts, students will explore the linguistic, rhetorical and pragmatic characteristics that define discourse production in the contemporary Spanish-speaking context, with reference to key topics in public debate such as the environment, gender, migration, health and interculturality.

The course aims to provide theoretical and methodological tools for:

· understand discourse as a social practice that reflects and produces worldviews.

Particular attention will be paid to textual organisation and representation processes related to diversity.

KNOWLEDGE APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

· Apply the main tools of discourse analysis to the textual genres covered (journalism, political communication, graphic novels);

·Recognise and analyse the discursive strategies used in texts to represent sensitive issues;

. Develop a metalinguistic reflection on the ways in which language conveys ideological and cultural visions;

· Argue critically on contemporary issues based on real sources, demonstrating sociolinguistic awareness and interpretative skills.

ADDITIONAL LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Independent judgement:

Ability to critically analyse complex texts in Spanish, recognising their functions and structures in different text types. Ability to independently formulate assessments and arguments on linguistic and cultural issues that arise during the course.

Communication skills:

Clear and correct communication in Spanish, with morphosyntactic and lexical mastery. Ability to understand, rework and discuss complex content, expressing personal opinions in a coherent and relevant manner.

Learning skills:

Autonomy in acquiring and applying the linguistic structures studied. Understanding and production of articulated texts, ability to summarise, reformulate and critically analyse written and oral materials, including in the media and intercultural contexts.

Course Prerequisites

Students must have intermediate-advanced language skills in Spanish (B2/C1 CEFR).

Teaching Methods

The course consists of 54 hours of teaching. The teaching activities are conducted in Spanish and include lectures and interactive lessons, with a communicative approach aimed at developing the advanced language skills of the students. The lessons include the theoretical and practical analysis of texts belonging to different genres, accompanied by practical activities such as exercises, group work and case studies, carried out using authentic materials provided in class. These structured and optional activities aim to stimulate active participation and debate in class. Some of these activities may be considered as ongoing assessments (partial exemptions) and will contribute to the overall exam assessment.

An integral part of the course are the annual exercises with expert native-speaking assistants (CEL), which are fundamental for consolidating communication skills and achieving the learning objectives.

Given the nature of the teaching, attendance at both the course and the exercises, while not compulsory, is strongly recommended.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a written test and an oral test.

The written test is a language assessment test that includes multiple-choice and open-ended questions, aimed at verifying the skills developed during the course and language exercises. Passing the written test is a prerequisite for admission to the oral test.

For further details on the structure and assessment criteria of the test, please refer to the pilot test available at the following link:
