Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to introduce students to the main aspects of medieval civilisation and history, with a particular focus on the Mediterranean area. In order to help develop in students the ability to read the historical fact as a complex phenomenon, the history of the 5th-15th centuries will be presented as an interweaving of spheres, which are too often considered disjointed: culture, art, religion, politics, etc. The course also aims to provide basic knowledge and methodology for the independent development of complex and appropriate arguments on topics of medieval history.

Expected outcomes:

  • Knowledge and ability to understand:

By the end of the course the student should know: the main problems and methods for the study of the medieval centuries; the characteristics of the Latin Middle Ages in comparison with other coeval civilisations; the main processes and contexts that characterised the medieval millennium. The student must have acquired a language adequate to the complexity of the subject, with correct information and clear and appropriate arguments.

  • Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:

By the end of the course, the student will have developed critical skills for the evaluation of historical texts and sources and the ability to formulate personal judgements according to the professional ethics of scientific historiography. Furthermore, the student must have acquired the necessary skills to reflect independently on the reconstruction processes of medieval history and must have developed the ability to use historiographical vocabulary.

Course Prerequisites

  • Basilar notions of chronology and geography related to the Eurasian space.
  • Knowledge of the main historical concepts.
  • Ability to develop coherent and lexically appropriate arguments.

Teaching Methods

The module will be conducted in face-to-face mode with the support of multimedia materials to encourage a form of participatory learning. Part of the lecture hours will be devoted to the analysis and interpretation of selected texts and sources.

Assessment Methods

The oral exam will focus on the texts indicated in the 'Teaching Materials' section. The examination will ascertain the student's acquired knowledge of the notions and methods of medieval history. The examination will also test the level of competence achieved in the analysis and interpretation of historical dynamics, and the communication skills in the presentation and discussion of various historical phenomena. The assessment is expressed in thirtieths. The language of the exam is Italian, unless agreed with the teacher.
