Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with a foundation of essential digital skills related to data management, scientific documentation, and the understanding of emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence. The training program is designed to enhance technical-operational capabilities while simultaneously developing a critical approach to the use of computer tools and data.

Upon completion of the Course, students will be able to:

  • Apply tools Office/Google Suite, with particular reference to using Word for the structured drafting of documents (theses, scientific articles) and Excel for the correct manipulation of data in tabular format, the use of functions, and their elementary analysis.
  • Manage and manipulate data by acquiring theoretical concepts and introductory practical skills necessary for the creation and maintenance of datasets.
  • Understand and analyze examples of knowledge representation (such as domain ontologies and Wikidata) to interpret how data is structured and made machine-understandable.
  • Identify, access, and use the main data retrieval platforms (Zenodo, European Language Grid, GitHub), demonstrating autonomy in searching for and utilizing digital resources for linguistic technologies.
  • Use statistical-linguistic software like Voyant Tools for basic text analysis, applying the concepts learned to the practice of digital humanities and textual analysis.

Communication Skills and Critical Thinking

  • Critical Thinking on AI: Develop a critical and informed view regarding the history and current evolutions of Generative Artificial Intelligence, analyzing and discussing the ethical and social implications that these technologies entail in the contemporary world.
  • Critical Thinking on Data: Independently evaluate the quality and reliability of data sources and retrieval platforms, and be able to select the best knowledge representation strategy based on the objectives.

Course Prerequisites

No prerequisites

Teaching Methods

The Course is held entirely online via the Microsoft Teams channels [see here for the access link]. The teaching approach is structured to foster practical learning and interaction: the activities include interactive lessons that combine a portion of theoretical explanation for introducing fundamental concepts related to data management and Artificial Intelligence, with immediate practical exercises. These exercises will allow students to apply and discuss the use of the software and platforms analyzed during the course.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a group discussion among students concerning the topics, concepts, and texts addressed and analyzed during the course. The exam is aimed at verifying the effective acquisition of theoretical knowledge and practical skills related to the tools and themes covered. The language of the exam is Italian, English if requested.

Texts

Programme:

  • Cristianini, Nello. La scorciatoia: come le macchine sono diventate intelligenti senza pensare in modo umano. Il mulino, 2023. (Capitoli 1 - 3).
  • Sadin, Éric. Secessione: una politica di noi stessi. LUISS University Press, 2023. (Parte I, Capitoli 1 - 3)
  • The texts and materials discussed and analyzed during the course (scientific articles, reference document) are shared digitally during the lessons. Students are invited to check the File section of the dedicated Teams channel to access all course material. For the link to the Teams channel and further information, please refer to the personal page: https://unifind.unior.it/resource/person/71364

Contents

The course focuses, in a first part, on the use of Office/Google suite tools, particularly Word for drafting documents (such as theses and scientific articles) and Excel for manipulating data in structured/tabular format and applying functions. In a second part, the course will focus on acquiring theoretical and practical knowledge related to data creation, management, and manipulation. Examples of knowledge representation on data to make it machine-understandable (such as domain ontologies and Wikidata) will be discussed and commented on.

Furthermore, students will gain knowledge about the main data retrieval platforms for linguistic and other technologies, such as Zenodo, European Language Grid, and GitHub, and will use statistical-linguistic software like Voyant Tools.

Finally, the course will briefly cover the history of artificial intelligence, with a focus on the learning strategies of generative AI and the ethical and social implications it is having in today's world.
