Course Objectives

Expected Learning Outcomes:

The course aims to provide students with the essential tools to understand the basic functioning of microeconomic and macroeconomic systems, and to think critically using economic methods. By the end of the course, students will be able to understand the relationships between economic variables based on the main existing micro and macroeconomic models.

Ability to Apply Knowledge and Understanding:

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to reason independently about key micro and macroeconomic dynamics and apply basic methodological and analytical tools to understand how markets function, the role of the state in the economy, and the relationships among macroeconomic objectives.

Additional Expected Learning Outcomes:

Independent Judgment: The course aims to stimulate students’ critical thinking by presenting the perspectives of different schools of thought on the causes and interpretations of major economic phenomena (e.g., unemployment, inequality).

Communication Skills: The teaching approach will be as interactive as possible, in order to enhance students’ ability to articulate and discuss the topics covered in class.

Learning Skills: Students will be exposed to academic debate and key current issues related to the course topics, in order to foster curiosity and encourage independent learning and deeper understanding.

Written exam with open-ended questions.

2. Consumer theory: constraints, demand and elasticity;

3. Production theory: production, costs, revenues and profits;

4. Market structures and market failures;

5. Macroeconomics: growth, unemployment, inflation and balance of payments;

6. National income;

7. Money;

8. IS-LM model and economic policies;

9. International economics, globalization and crisis.
