Course Objectives

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide the tools to understand the functioning of the linguistic mechanisms underlying theatrical storytelling. By the end of the course, students will be expected to:


  1. possess an overall knowledge of the history of theatre from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century;
  2. clearly understand the correspondence between the different periods in theatre history and their respective cultural and historical contexts;
  3. be able to recognize the construction and structure of dramatic works;
  4. reconstruct the mechanisms of theatrical narrative;
  5. relate the dramatic text to its stage production.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

During the assessment, the student must be able to formulate a structured and coherent discussion of the topics covered throughout the course. Based on the topics discussed and the knowledge acquired, the student will be expected to demonstrate:


  1. critical skills in the analysis of historical phenomena, applying personal and independent reading strategies and approaches;
  2. analytical skills in interpreting the adopted dramatic texts;
  3. adequate knowledge of the linguistic elements of the theatrical scene;
  4. the ability to relate the mechanisms of textual narration to those of theatrical action.

FURTHER EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

Autonomy of Judgment:

The student must be able to identify and rework the information contained in the studied texts, organizing their exposition of the topic in a personal way.

Communication Skills:

The student must be able to report on the topics covered in a coherent, logical, and comprehensive manner.

Learning Skills:

The student must demonstrate an adequate critical understanding of the studied texts, showing that they have grasped the themes and issues addressed throughout the course in a way that is neither fragmented nor purely memorized.


Course Prerequisites

Prerequisites:


  • adequate knowledge of the cultural history of European countries and its chronological division (important);
  • critical thinking skills and a propensity for reasoning (important);
  • interest in artistic languages (useful).

Teaching Methods

The course consists of lectures and interactive lessons conducted by the instructor, aimed at guiding students through the learning of the proposed topics. Lessons will be supported by audiovisual materials and teaching resources organized using multimedia tools.


Assessment Methods

The exam consists of an oral interview.

Evaluation criteria: coherence of exposition, ability to provide historical context, ability to analyze the dramatic structures of the texts (using the texts themselves as support during the exam), completeness of information, and appropriate use of both technical and general language.

Language of the exam: Italian.

Models of dramaturgical construction: from the crisis of drama to the dramaturgy of the second half of the twentieth century


1. Introduction to the course: structure, topics of the program, bibliography, main object of the History of the Theatre studies, basic elements of the theatrical language.

2. Study of the most important History of the Theatre moments (from 1800 to 1950's);

3. Analysis of the relationship between the historical scenic context and the dramaturgical composition forms;

4. Analytic study of dramatic texts;

5. Analysis of the relationship between textual dramaturgy and staging.

More information

During the academic year, in order to take the exam, students are required to attend at least two live performances (thus excluding films and recorded productions), which can be freely chosen according to individual taste and availability. At the beginning of the oral exam, the student must be able to briefly discuss the chosen performances, focusing on the staging, acting, and organization of the dramatic narrative.

The syllabus is valid for the exam sessions of two academic years: 2025–26 and 2026–27.
