Course Objectives

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course the student is expected to have acquired a basic knowledge of the formation of the medieval Georgian state and the social context in which literature developed. He or she would have acquired specific knowledge of the influence of Christianity and the Church in the initiation and development of the literary tradition.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

Students must be able to analyse and critically evaluate the phenomena studied. They must also be able to apply the methodologies of literary text analysis.

FURTHER EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

Autonomy of judgement:

Students are expected to be familiar with the key moments in the history of Georgian civilisation, from its origins to the 19th century, and be able to discuss them critically.

Communication skills:

Students must demonstrate their knowledge of data, names and specific terminology by using clear and appropriate language.

Learning ability:

In order to pursue the study of Georgian literature, students must familiarise themselves with the period's main protagonists and cultural-historical phenomena.

Assessment Methods

The examination is oral.

Language of the exam: Italian.

The learning assessment starts with the discussion of a topic of the student's choice. This serves to assess the social and historical knowledge acquired, the understanding of the content of the texts and the historical contexts in which they were produced, the acquisition of the tools of textual analysis and the critical capacity of the student. Additional targeted questions are used to ascertain the skills acquired during the course, the ability to critically discuss the texts with language property and expository competence.

Assessment criteria: the main assessment criteria will be the correct use of terminology, knowledge of the chronology of phenomena and the ability to critically analyse a period, an author or a work.

6. genres of ancient literature, with particular reference to hagiography;

7. Georgia in the 10th-13th century;

8. the political and cultural situation of the Georgian kingdoms in the 14th-18th centuries;

9. annexation of Georgia to Russia;

10. the developments of Georgian literature in the new political system in the nineteenth century.
