Syllabus

Course Objectives

Georgian Language I

At the end of the course, the student is expected to have acquired knowledge of the phonetic-phonological and graphemic system of the Georgian language. He or she would therefore be able to read and write under dictation, as well as know the current transliteration systems. The student is expected to have acquired the basics of nominal inflection and the first series of verb tenses in the active and passive diathesis. Through practice, at the end of the course he or she would be able to hold an elementary conversation, know the forms of politeness and translate simple sentences into Italian.


Georgian Language II

At the end of the course, the student is expected to have acquired knowledge of the phonetic-phonological and graphemic system of the Georgian language. He or she would have acquired the fundamentals of the entire nominal inflection, the second series of verb tenses in the active and passive diathesis, and the third series of verb tenses in the active diathesis. Through practice, at the end of the course he or she would be able to hold a conversation on topics of everyday life and translate simple sentences into Italian.


Georgian Language III

By the end of the course, the student is expected to have acquired knowledge of nominal inflection, and extended his or her knowledge of the verbal system to include middle verbs and all three tense series. Through exercises, the student must be able to hold a conversation on topics of everyday life and translate authentic texts of various essays into Italian.

Pass the exam of Georgian I.


Georgian Language III

Pass the exam of Georgian II

Assessment Methods

The examination consists of a written and oral test. The written test is preparatory to the oral one.

Language of the exam: Italian.

The written test involves an analytical grammar test on the topics covered and the translation of ten sentences from Georgian into Italian. The oral test also includes an assessment of reading and conversation skills on basic vocabulary.

Assessment criteria for Georgian Language I: the main assessment criterion is the ability to apply the analysis procedures learnt and the amount of morphological notions learnt.

Assessment criteria for Georgian Language II: the following are assessed with particular attention: the morpho-syntactic notions learnt, the correct use of terminology, the ability to analyse texts.

Phonology, morphology: declension of nouns and of adjectives, prepositions and conjunction of the verbs in the first series of tenses.

Verb conjunctions in all series of tenses (mediopassive voice), including irregular verbs.
