Overview

Date/time interval

CICLO ANNUALE UNICO (29/09/2025 - 29/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to enhance language skills through the completion of the introduction to the grammar of Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). At the conclusion of the course, students will be able to read Arabic texts on a variety of topics and of different types, thereby developing both comprehension and critical skills. They will be able to understand the fundamentals and specificities of syntax in written MSA, they will have expanded their vocabulary and will be able to articulate their opinions on the topics covered in texts analysed in class. The content of the texts proposed will correspond to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Additional expected learning outcomes:

Upon completation of the course, students should be able to apply the skills acquired with critical attitude and independent judgement. Furthermore, students should be capable of formulating assessments even when working with limited or incomplete data.

Students should be able to effectively communicate information, ideas, problems, and solutions on a range of subjects covered.

Students should have acquired the learning skills necessary to undertake further studies with a good degree of autonomy.

Course Prerequisites

Students must be familiar with the key concepts of phonetics and morphology (verbal and nominal) acquired during the first two years. They should already be familiar with the reading of non-vocalised texts on various topics and in different genres. Students must have passed their language exams from previous years.

Teaching Methods

The course includes lectures, seminars activities, and laboratory work.

During the course, texts will be studied and analysed in depth through comprehension exercises, lexical activities and grammar exercises. Students will also listen to audio texts related to the study topics and complete oral and written composition activities. New topics will be introduced, and topics covered in previous years will be revisited to consolidate and expand students' knowledge, with a higher level of in-depth study provided for topics introduced in previous years. To verify the skills acquired, students will carry out individual projects or research on specific topics, and there will be ongoing and end-of-course assessments. Listening and reading activities, as well as regular conversation practice, will be carried out with the CEL.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a written test and an oral examination. The written test will be carried out on the Moodle platform and will consist of reading an Arabic text and answering multiple-choice questions, selecting missing words, completing syntactic exercises and performing lexical tasks. Those who pass the written test must then take a standard Arabic interview on the topics covered during the course. During the oral exam, students must demonstrate their ability to explain the issues covered during the course and carry out a syntactic analysis of the analysed texts. Assessment is expressed as a mark out of 30. Passing the written exam is a prerequisite for taking the oral exam.
