Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with the knowledge and methodological tools necessary to critically analyze and evaluate the results of information characterized by variability and uncertainty. At the end of the course, students will be required to demonstrate:

  • Independent judgment: independently determine which methodological tools are most suitable for analyzing statistical data in relation to a specific objective.
  • Communication skills: knowing how to communicate the results obtained following the application of the methodological tools learned, using the appropriate terminology.
  • Learning skills: solving statistical problems that may arise in multiple disciplinary fields, such as economics, sociology, political sciences, etc.

Course Prerequisites

The course requires basic logical and mathematical knowledge, as well as the ability to study textbook materials.

Teaching Methods

The teaching activity will focus on understanding the fundamental theoretical concepts of statistics (such as probability, variability, correlation, association, distribution, and statistical synthesis) and interpreting statistical synthesis indicators for the analysis and comparison of collective phenomena. Examples from the socio-political and economic spheres will be used throughout the semester.

Assessment Methods

The assessment of the knowledge acquired will be done through an oral exam.

Texts

  • Borra & Di Ciaccio (2021) Statistica - Metodologie per le Scienze Economiche e Sociali, McGraw Hill
  • Piccolo (2020) Statistica per le Decisioni, Il Mulino

Contents

The course provides students with a fundamental understanding of descriptive and inferential statistics, with a particular emphasis on the application of these concepts in the context of political science. At the end of the course, students will be able to appropriately address the variability and uncertainty of statistical data.

Lectures will focus on understanding the fundamental theoretical concepts of statistics (such as probability, variability, correlation, association, distribution, and statistical synthesis) and interpreting statistical synthesis indicators for the analysis and comparison of collective phenomena.

The assessment of the knowledge acquired will be done through an oral exam.
