Course Objectives

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES


The course aims at providing historical, analytical and methodological knowledge tools to enable students to critically examine the main processes and fundamental dynamics that have characterised the evolution of international relations in the contemporary age, in the period between the Congress of Vienna and the current phase of the international system. The acquisition of this knowledge will also enable students to critically grapple with the main political and security issues open today in the global scenario and in the main regional contexts.


ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING


Students will have to demonstrate that they have understood, assimilated and critically re-elaborated the main historical processes and problematic junctures that have marked the evolution of the international system in the contemporary age, as well as the fundamental factors of continuity and historical discontinuity in the foreign policy of the most relevant state actors and in the assets of the main regional systems


URTHER EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

 

Autonomy of judgement:

At the end of the course, the student should demonstrate that he/she has acquired autonomy of critical judgement in the analysis of issues related to the history of the international system, the foreign policies of the main state actors and the geopolitical arrangements of the most relevant regional contexts.

 

Communication skills:

At the end of the course, the student should demonstrate that he/she has acquired communication skills in the presentation and critical exposition of problems and issues related to the history of the international system, the foreign policies of the main state actors and the geopolitical arrangements of the most relevant regional contexts.


Learning ability:

At the end of the course the student shall demonstrate that he/she has acquired adequate study method and capacity for learning and autonomous critical re-elaboration, with reference to the topics covered by the course. The knowledge and methodology acquired should enable the student to consolidate his/her general learning capacity in order to undertake subsequent advanced studies with a high degree of autonomy.


Course Prerequisites

A basic knowledge of contemporary history is appropriate


Teaching Methods

Teaching will consist of traditional lectures, supplemented by seminars that will be communicated to students well in advance


Assessment Methods

The final exam consists of an oral interview. It will assess the learning of fundamental concepts, the ability to analyze, think critically, and summarize content, as well as the correct use of terminology and discursive skills.
