AMMIRARE, CONOSCERE ED IMITARE? IL MIRACOLOSO, IL MIRABILE E IL MIRIFICO IN GUGLIELMO D’ALVERNIA

The purpose of this essay is to show the role of the marvels, the mirific and miracles in the theological and philosophical work of William of Auvergne. The theological sections, dedicated to the magisterium divinale, proceed from the ontological definition of miracle – of an Augustinian nature – to a historical description of laws and saints’ lives, without neglecting to reflect on the sacraments. The philosophical sections, devoted to the magisterium sapientiale show at times a sort of semantic and epistemic equivalence between miracles and marvels mediated by the use of mirificum.
