LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the course, students are capable of orienting themselves across multiple levels of analysis as well as across different theoretical perspectives. They are also capable of assigning different roles and functions to the different organizations and regimes examined. Student have acquired various theoretical and analytical tools thanks to which they have developed a more articulated vision of contemporary international politics.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the course, students have acquired a rich theoretical and empirical knowledge of international politics analysed through the main regional and international organizations, their role, functions, limits and capacity to manage and solve international crises. Students have developed the ability to place temporally, spatially and theoretically different challenges to the international order.

Making judgments:
At the end of the course, students have obtained the necessary tools to be able to understand and analyze international politics in a critical and conscious way.
Communication skills:
At the end of the course, students have improved their communication skills suitable for different professional contexts (e.g. International Organizations, NGOs, Think Tanks, etc.) through classroom presentations and written exercises.
Learning ability:
At the end of the course, students have learned how to use academic and external sources for the study of international politics, thanks to their increased familiarity with an integrated learning method.
Students may find it useful to consult the following manual: Jackson-Sorensen, Introduction to International Relations, theory and approches, Oxford University Press (last available edition) when they need clarification on topics related to international relations' theory addressed during the course.
Lectures (40 hours) are integrated and strengthened by class exercise (8 hours) and seminars (6 hours) that involve the active participation of attending students, with an interaction based on team working, class presentation and on the critical reading of the materials provided for the course.
For attending students:
Participation and presentations (written and oral) during the course (organised based on the overall number of attending students). Instructions on participation and presentations will be provided at the beginning of the course.
Final test: final written test with multiple-choice questions and open questions.
For non-attending students:
written exam: multiple-choice questions and open-ended questions (further instructions will be provided through the teacher notice board).
Evaluation criteria: knowledge, learning methodology, correct use of terminology; analytical skills.

In addition, the instructor will provide a list of readings at the beginning of the course. Non-attending students may contact the instructor to have access to the list of readings.
The course introduces students to international politics through the study of global and regional governance, its development, evolution and future prospects.
Topics will include:
1. Short introduction on the conceptual analysis of globalization, governance and diplomacy: their genealogy and their current state of affairs
2. Analysis of the main IOs dealing with peace and security (UN; NATO; EU)
3. IOs dealing with economic issues (IMF, WB, WTO)
4. IOs dealing with humanitarian and social affairs (UNHCR, Red Cross, UNDP)
5. Regional Organizations: not a blueprint but a reference point: the EU
6. Regional organizations in comparative perspective across the MENA region, Subsaharan Africa and Asia.
