Syllabus

Obiettivi Formativi

The course aims to provide students — in particular MA students in archaeological studies — with the historical, art-historical and critical tools needed to understand Tibetan cultural heritage and its role in the contemporary global world. By the end of the course students will be able to: 1) outline the main phases of Tibetan history and situate its artistic and material heritage within them; 2) recognise and analyse the principal forms of Tibetan art and material culture (architecture, sculpture, painting, ritual objects, manuscripts) and their iconography; 3) discuss critically the key issues of heritage in a global context — collecting, museum display, looting and repatriation, conservation and digital documentation; 4) communicate their analyses effectively in English, using appropriate art-historical and heritage terminology. Making judgements: students develop an autonomous, critical approach to heritage questions and their political and ethical implications. Communication skills: students learn to present and problematise the themes of the course in English. Learning skills: students acquire the ability to carry out independent research using bibliographies, museum resources and digital tools.


Prerequisiti

No specific prerequisites are required. As the course is taught in English, a good command of English (at least B2 level) is needed. A basic knowledge of Asian history and of art-historical or archaeological methods is useful. The course is designed for MA students and is open to students of Asian studies and related programmes.

Metodi didattici

Lectures in English, based on the analysis of images, objects and archaeological and museum case studies. Classes are supplemented by critical readings and materials made available on the e-learning platform. Where possible, the course includes the examination of museum collections and digital heritage resources.

Verifica Apprendimento

The examination is oral and held in English, and is designed to ascertain the acquisition of the course content and the ability to analyse critically works of art and heritage case studies. Students may be asked to present a short case study (an object, a site or a collection) discussed during the course.

Contenuti

Tibetan Cultural Heritage in the Global World introduces students to the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of Tibet and the Himalayan world and to its circulation, reception and transformation in a global context. The course combines a concise historical framework of Tibetan civilisation with an introduction to the history of Tibetan art and material culture — architecture, sculpture, painting, ritual objects and manuscripts — and with the critical study of heritage practices: archaeological sites, monasteries and temples, museum collections, looting and repatriation, conservation and the digital documentation of endangered heritage. Given the needs of students in archaeological studies, special attention is devoted to the art-historical and material dimension and to case studies such as Dunhuang, the early temples of Central Tibet and the global musealisation of Tibetan art.

The course is taught in English. Slides, readings and supplementary materials will be made available to the students. There is no separate programme for non-attending or Erasmus students. Non-attending students are invited to agree on a supplementary study path with the instructor.
