EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
The objective of the course is to provide students with the historical, analytical and methodological tools for a thorough understanding of the dynamics of inter-American relations from the early 1800s to the present. The intent will be to provide a solid body of knowledge related to the main characteristics as well as key passages and junctures of the relations that have occurred between the nations of the continent, encouraging an informed and critical study. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between the United States and Latin American countries, highlighting, in particular, trend lines, factors of continuity and discontinuity in the relationship from the “Monroe Doctrine” to the present day.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Students should demonstrate an understanding and critical reworking of the main features and developments in inter-American relations, as well as recurring elements and “irregularities” in the foreign policy of the continent's major state actors.

ADDITIONAL EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
The objective is to encourage a non-passive but, on the contrary, reflective and conscious approach in the study, interpretation and reworking of the information received, stimulating independent judgment, understanding and critical acquisition of the issues analyzed, as well as the refinement of the ability to expound and communicate these issues. It is also expected that this knowledge will enable the student to independently and critically confront the major political, economic and social issues currently open in the continental scenario.
