The essay deals with different data in ouyr possession for the purpose of a demographic analysis of Greek-Roman Egypt, taking into account both the number of inhabitants and the demographic characteristics. It tries to shed some light on the fact that, if Egypt, especially with regard to this second aspect, represents a privileged case bacause of the amount of documentation we have, the use of this evidfence does not come without problems and the fundamental points we can count on are not many. As regards the figures of the census, which certainly represent a very significant demographic material, they do not allow anything else that the identification of some trends.
