Gli scavi Maglione nel fondo Artiàco di Cuma: cronaca di una scoperta

Academic Article
Publication Date:
2008
abstract:
The discovery of a series of important archives has made it possible to reconstruct part of the involved and complicated succession of events linked to one of the most famous excavation campaigns in the Cuma necropolis, namely the campaign directed by Gaetano Maglione in the Artiaco field between 1901 and 1902. The files, completely transcribed in this work, cast new light on important archaeological discoveries such as the Artiaco tholos or the 103 bis and 104 tombs; they also enable its to enlarge the, in many ways, restricted scene offered by Giuseppe Pellegrini in his famous work published in 1903. On these bases a new perspective opens not only for the above-mentioned archaeological discoveries but also for the history of the National Arch. Museum in Naples itself between the last months of G. De Petra, s direction and the first years of Pais.s troubled and difficult management, with transition through the enlightened but all too short interlude of Paolo Orsi.
