abstract:
The country of origin. Writing between two cultures theme, chosen for the 2001 edition as a tribute for the multicultural authors, turns the Boekenweek into the theatre of a debate in which literary issues reflect the uncertainties of a society whose traditional pillars are tottering. The main question is: which are the borders of Dutch literature? An Other literature is assumed to exist and to differentiate for a particular condition: it is written by authors who inhabit a boundary position between two cultures.
The authors refuse each label which relegates them to any category only on the basis of ethnic diversity, rejecting the dichotomy allochthonous-autochthonous both in a literary and social context.
Among critics, Anbeek questions if it makes sense to speak of them as a separate group, considering that the authors themselves declare they have a Dutch literary background. Minnard opposes to place them in a third-place context, since it is within the collective literary scene that they contribute to create a new sense of Dutchness. Brems goes one step further when he questions: does Dutch literature still exist?
I decided then to focus on the works of three female writers born in Morocco, Rachida Lamrabet, Naima El Bezaz and Khadija Arib, whose leitmotiv is the identity conflict between two cultures, between tradition and emancipation, between family and wish for autonomy.
