The foundation of Greek colonies in Magna Graecia and Sicily brought to Italy the first “complex”
housing system developed in the Mediterranean area. With different shapes, including the variant
of the house with a Tuscan atrium, it spread widely starting from the Hellenistic age. After the
disappearance of the atrium house of Etruscan and Roman tradition, which happened with the
decline of the oligarchy that had made it a place of social and political consensus, the
Mediterranean house developed in the form of house with peristyle or colonnaded courtyard, as
witnessed in all Provinces of the Empire.
