Abstract:
The author presents a rare and unpublished painting on copper by Bartolomeo Cavarozzi housed in the Royal Monastery of La Encarnación in Madrid; the location, style and subject
of the work, which represents the Madonna of the Pillar appearing to Saint James the Greater, appear to indicate that it was created during the painter’s Spanish sojourn. It therefore provides a new element for the reconstruction of the complex interaction of figurative art between Italy and the Iberian peninsula, in which Cavarozzi played a key role, and which also underlies the evolution of masters such as Velázquez, Zurbarán and Murillo.
