The contribution brings new light on an important seventeenth century altarpiece by the Flemish-Neapolitan painter Niccolò di Simone ab antiquo in the Jesuit church at Valletta. Focusing on two payments in 1654, the article attempts to define the chronology and the circumstances which determined the commission of the Maltese painting.
