Symbolic and gestural uses of deixis in academic lectures

This paper takes into consideration the academic lecture and its relation to visual elements. It examines in particular the deictic 'here' and notes that the discourse surrounding this deictic is usually implicit and closely connected with the context as evidenced by the frequent use of pronominal referene and ellipsis. It is closely aligned to the gestural performance of the speaker and the common spatial context of both the speaker and the listener.
