This essay offers a parallel reading of F. S. Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and Pietro DiDonato's Christ in Concrete, focusing on the similarities in content and situation between the two novels, and on the ideological and stylistic factors, as well as the politics of reading, that have resulted in the vastly different canonical status of the two novels.
