abstract:
This paper examines and compares the use of speech levels and honorification rules in a conversation in South Korea, and it focuses its analysis on the dialogues in Bae Suah's novel Untold Night and Day. In the translation process, the loss ofhonorific elements that cannot be reproduced in the second language may trigger a significant impoverishment of the original flavor of the novel and risks significantly changing or reducing the personality of the characters. Therefore, we conducted an analysis of the dialogues in the selected novel, closely examining the codeswitching strategy adopted by some characters. This research discovered a conventional and normative use of courtesy grammar as well as a strategic use of it. We further investigated the characters' communication strategies and discovered additional aspects of their attitudes toward one another and detailed elements of their personality.
