Verga enters into the school programs one year after his death, in 1923. This paper intends to offer an initial survey of the ways and times of Verga's entry into grammars and scholastic anthologies, with the help of some examples that will highlight the different motivations behind the use of Verghian writings.
We will also count Croce's reflections that have had enormous repercussions on subsequent anthological choices, contributing to the creation of Verga's image, still present in schools (and universities), of a writer whose language should not be analyzed in the strict sense giving space to the pleasure of reading. In grammars, on the other hand, some peculiarities of Verga's style have often been underlined (also to tacitly distance them), accentuating the gap between Verga's choices and solutions complying with the norm.
