abstract:
The work represents the conclusion of a ten-year research aimed at the recovery of visual memory documenting stages and processes of Italian presence in Ethiopia and Eritrea during the period of colonization and beyond. Through a complex fieldwork and research in Italian and foreign archives, aimed at identifying the reality depicted, the book presents about 35,000 pictures of former colonial Museum in Rome concerning Ethiopia and Eritrea: a corpus of documents philologically reconstructed and representing a database of enormous value for the search.
Moving from the growing interest in this documentary source, the work represents the reflection, but at the same time also the instrument of historiographical renewal and growth that the africanistic discipline has registered in recent years, not only in Italy; a renewal that has invested the interpretative criteria as well as the tools and methodologies for the study and reconstruction of the past.
