Abstract:
V.F. Odoevskij (1803/4-1869) was one of the most original figures in Russian romanticism: writer, journalist, philosopher, musicologist, scholar of natural sciences and alchemy, inventor and much more. In Odoevskij's literary production there are several works that traditionally are referred to as "Science fantasy" or "Utopia", such as the short story "Two days in the life of the globe" (1828) and the unfinished novel "The year 4338" (1835-1840). in particular the last one is traditionally quoted as the first example of science fiction in Russian literature. This paper proposes an in-depht analysis of these works focusing in particular on their engaging with the past and the contemporary literary traditions.
