abstract:
This essay is one of three that opens the critical edition of the epigraphic catalog by Angelo Pantoni, which has come down to us in typescript form. The study provides a paleographic rereading of the early medieval inscriptions of Montecassino and proposes hypotheses about the scripts used and the influences exerted by the local scriptorium. The essay also analyzes the archaeological aspects related to the original location of the inscriptions within the two funerary areas of the monastery. These areas were partially investigated during the post-war reconstruction of the monastery.
