Dal Castrum Lucullanum al Vicus Missi: nuovi dati sul monastero napoletano di S. Severino fra tarda antichità e alto medioevo

Conference Paper
Publication Date:
2024
abstract:
From its earliest location at Lucullanum, the Neapolitan monastery of San Severino was relocated, in the very early 10th century, along with the revered remains of its eponymous saint, to a site within the city. The new cenobium, established near a church in the vicus Missi, became one of the main centers of urban spirituality, particularly after the acquisition of the relics of Saint Sossio. The interplay of data derived from the analysis of written and material sources allows the authors to reflect on the late antique origins and early medieval development of this significant urban 'sanctuary.' Part of the study is dedicated to the analysis of a nearly unpublished inscription that sheds light on the earliest history of the monastery.
