Buddhism in Konkan and the Western Ghats

The article presents the history of Buddhism in the coastal strip of Konkan, a crucial maritime corridor for Indian Ocean trade, directly supporting Western Deccan monastic centers. The study relies on a variety of sources: textual, epigraphic, archaeological, and art historical. Particular focus is placed on the tradition of rock-cut monasteries so widespread in the region.
