Two new stelae from Mersa Gawasis

Academic Article
Publication Date:
2007
abstract:
During the 2004/5 season the Italo-American archaeological mission at Wadi Gawasis found some new stelae in the south-western area of the site. The present paper describes only the two inscribed stelae, a third one being incomplete and engraved only with a seated figure of a man.
The first one, well preserved, is dated by the cartouche of king Nymaatra (Amenemhat III), while the second one is very damaged and it is not possible to see whether a date or the name of a king were present. On the basis of the onomastics and of paleo-epigraphic, stylistic and historical criteria, the author suggests a date between the late 12th and the 13th Dynasty
