Abstract:
The essay focuses on the Dutch East India Company (VOC), from its founding in 1602 to its ending in 1799, taking into exam the Dutch expansion into East Asia sea-board, as well as the coeval historical context in China and in Japan. The book exams the structure of the VOC, its bases in East Asia, its commercial policy, as well as its intercourse with the Chinese Ming and Qing Empires and with the Tokugawa Bakufu. The analysis also focuses on the daily life on board of the Dutch ships, and in the single VOC bases, such as Hirado (Kyushu: Japan), Batavia(Jakarta: Indonesia), Fort Zeeland (Tainan: Taiwan), Fort Zeeland (Tainan: Taiwan), Canton (Guanzhou: China). The book is based on the Chinese, Japanese, Dutch Historical Sources and Archives, as well as on the most recent bibliography published the topic.
