abstract:
This paper examines the different forms of prophecy recurring in sixteenthand seventeenth-century epic, political and religious poetry: prophecy post facta, that is regarding past events (Ariosto, Tasso) and prophecy of a nearby or distant future (Tasso, Tansillo, Carafa); prophecy regarding the future of a nation, the destiny of Europe or that of the entire world (Camões, Campanella). The author analyzes the role and meaning of the prophecy (referring to France) in Marino's mythological and anti-narrative poem Adone and discusses some late Renaissance religious compositions on the end of the world and the Day of Judgement.
