abstract:
The aim of this article is to analyse the Islamic juridical literature on a specific part of the male body, the beard, which has been the subject of growing
interest between the end of the last century and the first decades of the current one, essentially linked to the obligation imposed on it by some Islamic
states (or those that have declared themselves to be such). Specifically, the
article will examine and present the rules developed by Saudi Salafi jurists
regarding beards, i.e. the reasons why it is obligatory to grow a beard, the
sources from which this obligation derives, the reasons behind it and, finally,
the consequences that follow from its violation. The reconstruction is based
on the responses issued by the Permanent Committee of Scientific Research
and the Fatāwà, whose members are all Salafis.
