The volume explores the multiple forms of humor present in Vietnamese literature, from its origins to the revolutionary era, drawing on examples from popular theater and visual arts. These pages clearly show how, for the Vietnamese people, laughter has been a crucial element in safeguarding their identity and independent spirit throughout a particularly troubled history. Peasants oppressed by extremely harsh living conditions and the arrogance of feudal lords and mandarins, women subjected to strict Confucian morals, and intellectuals powerless in the face of French colonial domination are among the protagonists of the works examined by the author. They embody a people who, through popular comedy, dark humor, and political and social satire, have left numerous accounts of a relationship with power that has never been entirely submissive—a relationship characterized by a resilience that allowed the Vietnamese not to succumb when facing the immense tragedies that swept their country during the twentieth century.
