Abstract:
Comics and films are multimodal forms of artistic expression communicating through the modes of theverbal, the visual and the aural. Comics include not only images and written texts but also different kindsof means of visual language of comics, such as graphic signs and sound effects, reinforcing the highlightsof narration. These meaning-making features are also characteristic of films borrowing the visual meansof comics. In my article, I examine the reading experience of artworks combining the means of film andcomics: what happens during the course of reading or watching is of importance. This may concern, forexample, the narrative time of comics performed in semi-animated form or the voices of a film completedwith sound effects. I illustrate this phenomenon with fragments of the film Scott Pilgrim vs. The World(2010) and the motion comic Nick Carter Il mistero dei 10 dollari (1972).
