Asymmetrical Reactions. Venice and the Mongols Facing the Crisis of the Golden Horde: 1343–1475

This paper examines the complex relationship between Venice and the Mongols during the political crisis of the Golden Horde (1343-1475). The focus is on the strategic settlement of Tana, and the paper delves into the varying reactions of Venice and the Mongols when faced with different crises. Through analyzing historical sources, the paper aims to reveal the dynamic interplay of interests, conflicts, and collaborations that shaped the events of this critical period. This study aims to provide a nuanced viewpoint on how Venice navigated the challenges posed by the Mongol upheavals in the Azov region by examining political, economic, and military factors. Finally, it reassesses the notion of “decline” characterized by Western presence in the late 14th century Mongol Empire.
